The best known Highland Games in Scotland is probably The Braemar Gathering which is held in September each year; as it regularly attracts large crowds & press attention due to the annual attendance of the Royal Family. HOwever, it is really a personal preference of the attendee!!
No, you do not have to wear a kilt, but you are welcome to if you like!
Yes, anyone can participate during a Highland Games - locals and visitor to Scotland can have a go at tossing the caber, throwing the hammer and other heavy events. Some Highland Games will also welcome groups to form a Tug-o-war team to take on some locals!!
Competitors, such as dancers and pipe band members will be in full Scottish dress, and even the heavy -weights will usually have casual kilts on. For spectators there is no 'dress-code' for a Highland Games, however many visitors and locals do like to don a kilt - so if you are visiting, and have access to a kilt, feel free!!
The Cowal Highland Gathering, or Cowal Games takes place in Dunoon, on Scotland’s West coast in August each year. It regularly attracts some 3,500 competitors and around 23,000 spectators from all over the world - making it the largest Highland games in the world.
